Dr. Joel Muirhead is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. His internship was performed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. After completing a two-year tour as a flight surgeon at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Dr. Muirhead received his residency training at the combined Army and Air Force program at Brooke Army Medical Center and Wilford Hall in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Muirhead specializes in General Ophthalmology at the Heaton Eye Associates office in Longview, Texas. He has received training in all areas of comprehensive ophthalmology to include microsurgical techniques for cataract surgery, refractive surgery, oculoplastic surgery and glaucoma treatment. Dr. Muirhead has served as the Aeromedical Ophthalmology consultant to the U.S. Army Aeromedical Center commander, helping to formulate and implement policy on topics ranging from glaucoma care to refractive surgery protocols for U.S. Army aviation personnel.
He has also served as Chief of Ophthalmology and Department Chief of Surgery. Because of his academic achievements, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and was named “Intern of the Year” at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center for the academic year of 1993-1994. Dr. Muirhead is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Muirhead enjoys donating his time to charitable mission trips such as those sponsored by Medical Missions International as well as active duty military missions to provide ophthalmic care to foreign, indigent populations such as Mexico and Honduras.
